Newbern Middle School students celebrate Civics Day

The Georgia General Assembly designated October 3, 2008 as Civics Day. All schools were sent letters inviting parents and their child(ren) to participate. The day is dedicated to the improvement of civic education and participation by Georgia students in the areas of representative democracy, exercising the right to vote, and the crucial role of our state’s citizens in securing the blessings of liberty by becoming full participants in the political process.

As part of their Civics Day activities students at Newbern participated in a school wide mock election on October 20, 2008. In preparation for the election students studied the meaning of democracy, constitutional amendments pertaining to voting rights and the levels of government. Service Learning students from Mrs. Marilyn Johnson’s class created voter registration forms modeled after the official registration forms.

Service Learning students also decorated the lab with red, white and blue and created voting buttons that were distributed to students after they cast their votes. Students voted October 20th in the computer labs that were the designated polling booths where students cast their votes for their favorite presidential, congressional and district representatives.
